ID for a tin glazed charger please
« on: April 11, 2014, 05:41:36 PM »
Hi guys,

I recently bought this large tin glazed charger at auction and am trying to discover more about it!

It's 15.75" (40cm) in diameter and hand painted with a naive rabbit hunting scene. There is what may be a maker's mark on the back which is very indistinct (see picture) and also a worn/blank paper label which I don't think will help but I could post a picture if you think it might! I would love to know where the charger was made and how old it is, and am hoping that someone out there may be able to help me.

With many thanks in anticipation of any help you can give me. John  8)

Thanks for the link Rose ~ it's much appreciated. Some similar items there, but nothing which strikes me as 'Yes, that's it'!

Below is a picture of the label ~ I'd be surprised if it's any help, but you never know!

Many thanks again, John.

My quick thoughts on it are:

~ old label
~ thought of Italy when first looked at it...
~ Also thought German by the little things in each corner of the label

Do you have a UV light?

Try that on the Red mark to see if picks up anything else in the Red print...worth a try

Sometimes the camera will see more than our Eye... :czy:

Did you LOOK close at the Rabbit scene to see if it is signed anywhere??  Just a thought as it could be, or hidden in the scene and not that easy to see.

Just a thought??

Some interesting ideas there! Will have a good look for a signature and also at the red mark under UV a bit later and update you when I've done so.
Many thanks again.

The design around the Edge (in thick Blue) reminds me of either just a C-Scroll or C-Scroll and Wave

Just a thought.....

Have now had a chance to inspect the charger again and I'm afraid I can't find a signature, nor does a UV light show anything new on the back mark. The only thing I can add is that the final positions of the two dogs at the bottom of the scene appear to be different than in the original 'sketch' as there are faint outlines of them just to one side of where they ended up!

I agree that the border looks like a (rather crude) C-Scroll, but haven't managed to track it down that way either.

Have already written to the V&A for help but only did it a couple of days ago so am awaiting their reply ~ will let you know if/when I hear from them. Will also check out the MoL link.

Many thanks again, John.

Have just received this reply from the V&A:

"I am writing in answer to your enquiry.  Your photos are excellent.  Your charger would appear to be possibly late 19th century, or more probably early 20th century.  Its style and subject imitates maiolica wares made in Spain and Italy in the 16th century, but the type of glaze, border pattern and palette mean that your dish cannot be early.  Following the fashion for collecting the early pottery, many potteries in these countries made reproductions of their earlier wares from the late 19th century onwards.  Unfortunately it is not possible for us to pin down the actual pottery that made your charger."

An ID doesn't seem very hopeful then!

Thanks again for your efforts.

Cheers, John.
